Under this scheme, grants are awarded to promising high-level research projects in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics carried out by individual scientists or research units in one of the science & technology-lagging countries identified by TWAS. Research grants to individual scientists amount to a maximum of US$15,000, or US$30,000 to research units. The grants may be used to purchase scientific equipment, consumables, and specialized literature. Individual applicants must be nationals of developing countries. Applying research units must be led by a renowned researcher who is a national of a developing country.

The AGNES Intra-Africa Mobility Grant and AGNES-PAWS Intra-Africa Mobility Grant enable doctoral students from sub-Saharan African countries to spend research stays of 1-2 months at a university/research institute in another sub-Saharan African country, where they will be collaborating with an experienced researcher. AGNES-PAWS is for female candidates (“Programme Advocating Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics”, PAWS), and AGNES Intra-Africa Mobility Grant for Junior Researchers is for male and female candidates. A maximum Grant amount of EUR 2300 and EUR 3000 is earmarked for 1 and 2 months stays, respectively.

Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in Morocco and the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland have launched the Excellence in Africa initiative with the aim of supporting the training of promising early-stage researchers in Africa. Funding is available for jointly designed research projects comprising an early-stage professor in Africa and an EPFL professor, and research projects will be implemented at African higher education institutions.

Mastercard Foundation has partnered with RUFORUM to transform African agricultural universities and their graduates to better respond to developmental challenges through enhanced application of science, technology, business, and innovation for rural agricultural transformation. For the academic year 2020-21, 30 Master’s Scholarships are available, of which 50% will be for Kenya and Uganda nationals. Fifty percent of the scholarships will be awarded to female applicants. The scholarships are tenable at Egerton University in Kenya and Gulu University in Uganda.

This call for proposals with CEPI is to support efforts to prepare and conduct a large-scale clinical trial that has the potential to achieve proof of concept and/or the demonstration of pivotal efficacy of novel candidate vaccines against Lassa virus. Applications must include a minimum of one clinical trial to be conducted in affected countries in sub-Saharan Africa to test the safety, immunogenicity, and/or efficacy of a candidate vaccine. The budget is €40 million to fund 1-2 grants.

The TWAS-DFG Cooperation Visits Programme provides postdoctoral researchers who have obtained their PhD not earlier than 2015 and are from sub-Saharan Africa, including South Africa, with the opportunity to make a ‘Cooperation Visit’ to an institute in Germany. Such visits will have a duration of no more than three months and must be undertaken within 12 months of the award.

The World Academy of Sciences Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Partner wishes to invite you to nominate suitable candidates for the TWAS Young Affiliateship. Every year the five TWAS Regional Partners each select scientists to be Young Affiliates for a period of five years. During their tenure, Affiliates are invited to participate in TWAS general meetings and conferences as well as provide feedback to TWAS on how the Academy can respond to the needs of young scientists in developing countries. The idea of the Young Affiliateship is to give opportunities to young scientists who currently do not have them because they are based in Africa or elsewhere in the developing world. To be eligible, the nominated scientists must have PhD, be aged 40 or less on 1st January of the year in which they are selected, living and working in a developing country for at least the past three years and have an excellent track record of at least 10 international publications in peer reviewed journals. Nominations are invited from TWAS and AAS fellows, Members of National Academies and fellows, Members of Young Academies of Science in the region, Research Institutions, Research Councils and Universities in the region. Self-Nomination is also acceptable. The nomination of women is encouraged.

The Global Confederation of Higher Education Associations for the Agricultural and Life Sciences World Agriculture Prize aims to encourage the development of the mission of higher education institutions in education, research, innovation, and outreach in the agricultural and life sciences by recognizing the distinguished contribution of individuals to this mission. Two US$100,000 prizes will be awarded in 2020 with at least one recipient coming from a country NOT classified as having a developed economy.
