COVID-19 and SARS-CoV-2 update from Immunopaedia.org.za

Did you watch the IUIS Webinar on Adaptive Immunity: Memory, Protection and Immunopathology in COVID-19 by Professor Andreas Radbruch (Director of the  German Rheumatism  Research  Centre Berlin).

During his webinar he gave a brief, yet comprehensive overview on induction and hallmarks of adaptive immunity, and implication it may have for SARS-CoV-2 immunity. Prof Radbruch presented data that demonstrated  SARS-CoV, responsible for the 2002/3 outbreak, induced robust levels neutralising antibodies. However these antibodies did not persist long term and reached almost undetectable levels 2 years post infection. This suggests that though primary SARS-CoV-2 infection may induce protective antibodies, responses may not be long-lived nor sufficiently induce herd immunity.
